Overview

The Morgan County R-2 District offers on-going professional development.  This professional development includes a plan specifically for new teachers of the district, but anyone is welcome to attend.  This professional development targets the mentors as well.  They meet on the second Wednesday of every month.

In addition, the district offers on-going professional development in the area of technology.  Topics cover inquiry-based practices in addition to software knowledge and implementation strategies.  Visit the Technology Workshop Schedule to determine if there is a workshop that meets your needs.  Beginning with the 2005-06 school year, selected teachers participating in the SMARTBoard initiative will participate in eMINTS4All professional development.  This develop involves 80 hours of professional development over two years.  The district PD4ETS (Instructional Technology Coordinator) provides this training.  As the SMARTBoard initiative expands into future years, an on-going cycle of five teachers per year will be involved in this professional development.

The US Department of Education unveiled on October 5, 2004, a new professional development web site for teachers and administrators.  It is a free resource, built by teachers for teachers to help encourage the use of proven classroom strategies and provide more effective ways of using data to improve instruction.  The site is the culmination of more than 12 workshops and hours of educator-led discussion and roundtable sessions about how best to improve teacher training in accordance with the federal No Child Left Behind Act.  The site is located at: http://www.paec.org/teacher2teacher.

ABOUT OUR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE:

PDC is a district committee that is charged with the responsibility of spending 1% of  75% of the districts state money to help the districts teachers obtain “high quality” professional development.  The members are elected by the teachers, and meet monthly to discuss and grant PDC requests.  Before each meeting an agenda will be distributed to committee members via email and minutes of the meetings will be maintained.  One of the committee’s goals is to help you as teachers get the professional development that YOU the teacher need and want.  Some of the ways that we hope to achieve this is by responding to the annual survey results and by making sure that requests will help meet the building and district CSIP goals.

2008-2009 Professional Development Committee Goals

The committee is committed to reviewing the results of the annual survey and working towards the implementation of a sound District Professional Development Plan that will balance the needs of teachers throughout the district in an equitable and educationally sound manner.  A specific goal of the committee is to continue offering more HQPD in house with the hope that it will have a positive impact on the largest number of teachers.

So WHAT IS HIGH QUALITY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT?

All children deserve to be taught by highly qualified teachers, and all teachers deserve the opportunity to be involved in high‑quality professional development. The following criteria can be used to identify high-quality professional development.

http://dese.mo.gov/divimprove/pd/hqpd.pdf

To be considered high-quality PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, an activity must meet all SEVEN of the first criteria and at least one in each of the other two sets of criteria.

One‑day workshops and short-term conferences or workshops are not considered high‑quality professional development, unless they are part of an ongoing program or plan and may not be funded with federal funds.

A district may still fund some of these activities out of professional development or other funds they have, but they are not considered high‑quality.

Finally, professional development activities should be regularly evaluated for impact on teacher effectiveness and improved student learning, Standard 5.

HOW DO I COMPLETE THE PROCESS TO REQUEST

High Quality Professional Development?

STEP ONE:

To submit a request for HQPD please fill out the form at this link.

http://www.mcr2.k12.mo.us/mainpages/resources/pdcforms/pdcrequestform.doc

STEP TWO:

Then submit the request to your building administer for an approval signature.

STEP THREE:

Send the signed request to the current PDC CHAIR, along with any registration information and workshop details so that your request can be presented to the PDC committee.

*The PDC committee meets two weeks before the board meeting because all expenditures must be submitted by PO, which must be approved by the board, so please be prompt if you want to be considered.  A school board meeting must approve any checks that need to be sent along with a registration or for a hotel stay etc.  Therefore plan ahead at least one month.

STEP FOUR:

After the PDC committee meets to go over your proposal you will receive a letter via email detailing the results of the meeting and giving you further instructions.  Often you will need to complete registrations, pick up checks, submit sub request etc.

STEP FIVE:

Attend the conference.  (Hang onto all receipts for mileage, food, other expenditures as you must submit these after the conference using the district expense form.)

STEP SIX:

When you return from the conference you need to fill out and submit to your building principal and to the PDC Chair the Post Conference Worksheet Form found at the link below.

http://www.mcr2.k12.mo.us/mainpages/resources/pdcforms/Post%20Conference%20Report.doc

If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to address them to a committee member or myself,

thanks,

Curtis Cunningham
